Uri Shafir

No Forest

Solo, 2021

It would seem that there are no places farther apart or more distinct in their essence than the forest and the theater’s stage. The forest is a place where everything happens- untold, undescribed, disorganized, untidy. In this solo, a dancer wishes to enchant the choreography as if it were a forest, unpredictable, sizzling with life and, full of possibility, rife with hidden, tangled, intertwining paths. Finally, the stage can be a place where it is possible to disappear, to cast doubt, to get lost, as a must to survive in a world in which the mind exhausts its paths.

“In No Forest Uri Shafir approaches choreography as a space for experimentation and exploration. The action unfolds as a type of stream of consciousness translated into composed movement. At times it seems that the sequence comes together as a random chain of positions placed one after another without any organizing principle while at others it is possible to identify a structural framework based upon defined choreographic mechanisms such as repetition. In a similar way, the movements appear at specific moments to be an interpretation of the musical layer and at others- a response to an emotional impetus or internal energy. These fluctuations expose something of the built in and apparently intentional duality in the work, which sheds light on Shafir’s position in relation to it: he leads it while being led by it, weaves together materials and inspirations but also discovers in real time hidden layers within it. Such the formal getting lost becomes a poetic pondering on this moment in time and “a world in which the mind exhausts its paths” (from the program).
